Forester excited about small carrying mat for moving red deer and fallow deer

Without the right equipment, moving small animals like fallow deer can be a strenuous task. But with the new small animal handling rug from DANiNJECT, the task becomes much easier, says forester Jacob Skriver from Jægersborg Deer Park.

Forester Jacob Skriver and his colleagues at Jægersborg Deer Park were used to relying on a large handling rug when moving the deer they capture for sale to other deer parks.
It worked, but it wasn't an optimal solution because, with narrow animals like fallow deer, they had to lift their arms high into an uncomfortable working position.

That's why Jacob Skriver was interested in testing the new DANiNJECT handling rug for smaller animals (up to 200 kg):

“It worked really well. Because of the size and the stiffening, we don't have to lift the animal as high, and we could also see that the bars that are inserted along the edge and used for lifting work really well,” he says.

It's not just the size of the rug that’s new. The handling rug also has a stiffer frame, sturdy bars, and a mat that both stabilizes and insulates so that the immobilized animal does not have to lie directly on the cold ground. It also easily folds into a small bag for easy transportation (see instructions).

“We're very excited about it and we've also used it to move red deer hinds. It's not big enough for the stags, but for the smaller, narrow animals, it works great,” says Jacob Skriver.

When Jægerborg Deer Park has to move a fallow deer, the animal is first immobilized. It is then placed on the handling rug so that it can easily be carried off for treatment. The animal is placed on a table where the vet can injectt minerals, vitamins, pain relief, as well as a sedative injection to keep it calm during the subsequent transport. It is then transferred into a transportation crate and driven to its destination.
